53 red cards, a Guinness World Record and a stunning sacrifice: Football's most chaotic match takes another twist

A world-record 53 red cards, alleged death threats against a referee, a mass brawl involving players, coaches and officials and somehow, the extraordinary fallout from a Brazilian Under-20 football match did not end there. Uberlandia have voluntarily forfeited their Minas Gerais Under-20 Second Division semi-final against Mamore in an extraordinary gesture of fair play, sacrificing the club's place in the final after their opponents were left with just seven eligible players following one of football's most chaotic matches.

The remarkable decision came after Sunday's first leg, which Mamore won 3-1 before the contest descended into violence. The trouble began long before the mass brawl.

Eight minutes into the second half, Uberlandia's Luiki was sent off for a second bookable offence, prompting club officials to enter the pitch and confront the referee. The match was suspended for approximately 40 minutes before play eventually resumed, but the situation exploded again deep into stoppage time.

Mamore scored their third goal in the 99th minute, with Davi reportedly directing provocative gestures and insults towards the Uberlandia bench during the celebrations. A confrontation involving Uberlandia's goalkeeping coach quickly escalated into a mass brawl, with players and coaching staff from both teams exchanging punches and kicks.

Referee Fernando Patrick Drosghic Modesto abandoned the match amid the disorder, before recording an astonishing number of dismissals in his official report. Referee's report: Threats, violence and police involvement The referee's report, detailed by Brazilian outlet UOL, painted an alarming picture of events at the Parque do Sabia stadium.

Modesto alleged that several Uberlandia officials entered the pitch following Luiki's dismissal, directing insults and threats towards the officiating team. According to the report, Uberlandia football manager Willer Francisco Silva threatened to assault the referee and suggested he would confront him outside the stadium.

Modesto also alleged that Silva expressed a desire to kill him, prompting the referee to file a police report. Uberlandia president Fabio Mineiro was separately accused of threatening to end the referee's career.

The report also detailed the violence that followed Mamore's late goal, with dozens of players and staff implicated in the confrontation. "In the 54th minute of the second half, a generalised brawl broke out, making it impossible to show the red cards and to carry out the match-closing protocol," Modesto wrote in his report.

"Therefore, owing to all the turmoil and the lack of security, I declared the match ended." The referee also reported allegations of damage to Mamore's dressing room, including vandalised facilities, with a separate police report expected.
