Achraf Hakimi pays tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo after Portugal captain retires from international football

Achraf Hakimi has thanked Cristiano Ronaldo for his contribution to football after the Portugal forward announced his retirement from international football. The Morocco and Paris Saint-Germain defender shared a photograph of himself with Ronaldo from the 2018 World Cup on his official Instagram account.
The image was accompanied by a message in English: "Thank you for everything Cristiano, a legend who will forever remain in the history of football." The photograph was taken during Morocco's 1-0 defeat by Portugal in the second round of the group stage at the World Cup in Russia. Ronaldo scored the only goal of the match with a header in the fourth minute, earning Portugal three important points.
The result was Morocco's second successive defeat and led to their early elimination from the competition. Hakimi started for Morocco in what was one of his first appearances on the global stage.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, was representing Portugal at a World Cup for the fourth time. The end of a 23-year international career Ronaldo, who is 41, has ended a remarkable international career that began in August 2003.
He made 234 appearances for Portugal and scored 146 goals, leaving him as the world record holder for both men's international appearances and goals. During his time with the national team, Ronaldo helped Portugal win UEFA Euro 2016.
He also played a key role in their UEFA Nations League triumphs in 2019 and 2025. He became the first player to score at six different editions of the World Cup, adding another record to a career that has produced a series of international milestones.
Ronaldo's decision applies only to his international career and does not represent a full retirement from football. He will continue to play at club level for Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr.
His departure closes a chapter lasting more than two decades with Portugal, leaving behind records and achievements that will remain part of football history. Morocco are scheduled to face Niger in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying on 13 November 2026, while Portugal are due to play Denmark in the Nations League - Pathway One on 14 November 2026.
