Argentina legend Aguero defends Manchester City over Premier League financial charges

Agüero, who spent 10 years with Manchester City and became the club's all-time leading goalscorer before his departure in 2021, dismissed the allegations in strong terms while reflecting on his time at the club.

He said his experience inside the organisation convinced him that the club's success had been achieved legitimately. Blueprint reports "These charges are just there to bring the team down and none of it is true.

I spent 10 years at this club, I know how everything was done and we won it all the right way," Agüero said in comments circulating after the latest development in the case. The former Argentina international also suggested that rival clubs were behind the legal challenge because of Manchester City's success, describing the situation as an expression of jealousy.

Those comments represent Agüero's view of the case and its origins, rather than an independent finding about the motives of other Premier League clubs. City found guilty on 114 charges Agüero's intervention comes after reports that an independent commission found Manchester City guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules in 114 of the 115 cases brought against the club.

The case followed a four-year Premier League investigation and was formally referred to an independent commission in February 2023. The allegations covered several seasons and included claims relating to the accuracy of financial information, player and manager remuneration, UEFA financial regulations, Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules and cooperation with the league's investigation.

The reported breakdown of the original 115 charges included 54 allegations concerning the provision of inaccurate financial information, 14 relating to player and manager remuneration, five concerning UEFA regulations, seven involving Premier League profitability and sustainability rules, and 35 alleging failures to cooperate with the Premier League investigation. Manchester City have consistently denied wrongdoing throughout the process.

Following reports of the commission's findings, the club said the Premier League process remained ongoing and stressed that significant elements of the proceedings had yet to be completed. City also maintained that its position remained consistent with its original response to the charges.

Agüero points to decade at Etihad Agüero's defence of City is rooted largely in his personal experience at the club. The Argentine joined Manchester City from Atlético Madrid in 2011 and became one of the most important players in the club's modern history.

During his 10-year spell, he helped City win multiple Premier League titles, FA Cups, League Cups and Community Shields. He also became synonymous with the club's transformation into one of English football's most successful teams of the modern era.
