Arne Engels is a 'Premier League player' - West Ham critic taught a lesson

Arne Engels might have joined West Ham United for a Championship-record fee after five trophies in two seasons at Celtic, but that does not mean everyone north of the border was convinced he'd be a success in claret and blue. During a couple of silver-coated seasons in Scotland, Engels became more renowned for his 'world-class' set-piece delivery than anything else.

Something West Ham United are starting to see this side of Hadrian's Wall, Arne Engels providing his second assist in claret when crossing for Konstantinos Mavropanos at Bolton Wanderers. Zamora only scored 18 Prem goals - but where does he rank among West Ham's most influential modern-day strikers?

Yet, in the eyes of his critics, the Belgium international's dead-ball threat did not make up for what they deemed to be a lack of impact in open play. Twelve of Engels' 17 goals for Celtic came from the penalty spot, after all.

So when West Ham paid Celtic a historic fee of £22 million, PLZ Soccer host Peter Martin was left with a puzzled expression.
