Barcelona 3-0 Aston Villa: Raphinha brace ends visitors' perfect Champions League start

Barcelona returned to winning ways in the Champions League with a convincing 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at Camp Nou on Tuesday evening. Lamine Yamal opened the scoring early in the first half before Raphinha struck twice after the interval to condemn Unai Emery's side to their first defeat of this season's competition.
The result provided the perfect response for Barcelona following their defeat in their previous European outing, while ending Villa's six-match winning streak in Champions League league-phase fixtures. Hansi Flick's side made an excellent start and took the lead after just seven minutes following a mistake from the visitors.
Joao Gomes misplaced a pass that was intercepted by Yamal, who moved beyond Pau Torres before curling a left-footed effort into the far corner. Villa responded positively to the early setback, with Matty Cash and Gomes seeing efforts blocked following corners.
Johan Manzambi subsequently fired wide after being released by Nicolas Jackson, as the visitors attempted to exploit Barcelona's high defensive line. The hosts nearly doubled their advantage when Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki surrendered possession, but he recovered to deny Anthony Gordon.
Manzambi later tested Joan Garcia with a powerful effort, although Barcelona retained their narrow advantage heading into half-time. Villa's hopes of mounting a comeback suffered another setback seven minutes after the restart when Raphinha doubled Barcelona's lead.
Fermin Lopez helped create the opportunity before the Brazilian's effort took a significant deflection off Victor Lindelof and beat Suzuki. The goal allowed Barcelona to establish greater control, with Pedri particularly influential in dictating the tempo from midfield.
Raphinha then put the contest beyond Villa's reach, completing his brace following an excellent piece of attacking play from Joao Cancelo. The Portuguese defender advanced down the flank before delivering an outstanding outside-of-the-boot cross that Raphinha converted from close range.
It was the Brazilian's 19th goal of the season, continuing his impressive scoring form under Flick. Emery introduced several substitutes in an attempt to change the contest, but Barcelona remained comfortable despite Villa threatening occasionally.
Leon Goretzka came closest to reducing the deficit when his header struck the post late in the match. Barcelona ultimately secured their first clean sheet in 19 Champions League matches, ending a lengthy defensive run without a shutout.
