Bayern Munich punish Atletico mistakes to claim Champions League win in Madrid

Bayern Munich secured a valuable 2-0 victory away to Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano on Tuesday, taking all three points from the Spanish capital in the fourth round of the Champions League league phase. The visitors took the lead in the 54th minute after a costly error from Atletico defender Robin Le Normand.

Having received the ball inside his own penalty area, Le Normand hesitated over whether to pass or clear it, allowing young Bayern forward Lennart Karl to close him down and win possession. Karl then finished into the net, capitalising on an unexpected defensive gift to give the German side the advantage.

Bayern doubled their lead in the 74th minute through Konrad Laimer. The midfielder collected an excellent pass from Harry Kane, drove into the penalty area and struck a powerful effort beyond the goalkeeper to confirm Bayern's control of the match.

The visitors appeared to have scored a third goal in the 80th minute, but it was ruled out following a video assistant referee review. The decision came after the officials judged that Dayot Upamecano had committed a foul, leaving Bayern to settle for a two-goal victory.

Bayern withstand absences Bayern controlled most of the contest, dominating possession and dictating the tempo. Atletico attempted to threaten on the counter-attack but were unable to create sustained danger for Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

The Bundesliga side also overcame a series of absences, particularly in attack. Jamal Musiala, Luis Diaz, Serge Gnabry and Ismael Saibari were all unavailable, while Bayern manager Vincent Kompany was also ill.

Despite those setbacks, Bayern produced a strong performance and earned a deserved win at their Spanish opponents' home ground. The result moved Bayern Munich on to 8 points and into eighth place in the Champions League league-phase table.

Atletico Madrid remain on 4 points and have dropped to 22nd after suffering their second defeat in the competition.
