Cardinale explains why he is happy with Milan investment: "The Yankees of Italian soccer"

Gerry Cardinale has insisted he has absolutely no regrets about buying AC Milan, explaining the avenues for growth he sees. Cardinale's fund RedBird Capital took over from Elliott Management in 2022 after Milan's Scudetto win.

They continued the good work that the fund started from a financial perspective, even if the silverware on the field has not flowed like many hoped. Read SempreMilan ad-free and get access to exclusive news.

There are no signs of RedBird selling the club on any time soon, withimportant projects coming upsuch as the new stadium being built and the NBA Europe plan which could further drive revenues back towards Europe's elite clubs. He has also beenfar more hands-onsince the summer, too.

On October 1st, Cardinale was a guest on Bloomberg Screentime 2026. The owner of Milan and head of RedBird Capital talked about why it's worth investing in European football and what plans he has for the club.

If you could buy a sports team today, which one would it be? Regardless of the money, what would be the best asset?

It might sound obvious, but I'll tell you about Milan. It's one of the most important cities in Europe, incredibly important in the fashion industry.

They're the New York Yankees of Italian soccer, and Italian soccer was what the Premier League is today. "My investment strategy is to go where there's something that needs fixing and do it, accelerating the process to bring them back to where they were before.

European soccer is a huge opportunity. I think everything in America is terribly overpriced right now.

What I'm trying to explain to Europe is that entertainment is needed to finance sports. We bought San Siro, the iconic stadium in Milan, and we'll build another stadium with 80,000 spectators."
