City icon Silva, 40, scores in Hong Kong on one-off professional football return
David Silva returned to professional football on Saturday, appearing for Supreme Sha Tin in the Hong Kong Premier League and scoring a goal. The 40-year-old former Manchester City star confirmed this comeback would be limited to a single match.
Silva announced his return to the professional game a month ago, three years after he had previously retired. Although his announcement suggested a longer-term comeback, it has now emerged that he will only play this one fixture.
He featured in Supreme Sha Tin's match against Hong Kong Rangers, giving his side the lead from the penalty spot. The game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Speaking to local media after the match, Silva clarified that he would not be staying in Hong Kong. "They acted as if I had signed for a whole year, but it is just for one match," he said.
"The offer interested me because I love this country and have a friend living here. I wanted to give my best in this one game.
With this appearance, Silva's playing career appears to have truly come to an end. He won the World Cup with Spain in 2010 and was part of the squads that claimed the European Championship in 2008 and 2012.
During his time at Manchester City, Silva played 436 matches and won four league titles."
