Croatian football fans shout Hitler and antisemitic chants as police make dozens of arrests

Mark Birbeck, founder of Our Fight on British Jews, speaks about standing up to antisemitism | GB NEWS. Fans were seen following a vehicle carrying a coffin with "Ajax" written on the side.
Less than 24 hours before the chants, police made dozens of arrests to avoid violent clashes between rival supporters in Split. The build-up to the contest preceded the club's first major European match in 16 years.
Hadjuk Split won 2-1 on the night, with the game having to be temporarily stopped due to pyrotechnics. A few weeks prior, England played in Rijeka as they thumped Croatia 7-0, where adult supporters were banned following the arrest of seven fans over allegedly making Nazi salutes when they played France last year.
UEFA issued a "behind-closed-doors" sanction following the game in March 2025. Hadjuk Split rose to 11th in the UEFA Conference League after last night's win, while Brighton topped the table after beating FK Kauno Zalgiris.
Goals from Georgino Rutter, Jack Hinshelwood and Matt O'Riley helped the Seagulls win 4-0 in a convincing display. Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler said the competition gives several players who may not get regular minutes a chance to play.
He said: "We showed a good performance, a disciplined performance, a performance where we kept a clean sheet and a performance where a lot of players used the opportunities. This will be key for the season, that we can really rely on each other.
Rutter bagged a brace on the night, having struggled for regular minutes in the Premier League. Commenting on his performance, he told TNT Sports: I'm very happy to have two goals, but more important is the three points.
We are very happy to start the competition like this. I think we have a good side.
We're in good shape at the moment, so we have to keep going. It's not every time like one player."
