Edo Queens Off To Egypt On Monday For CAF Women's Champions League, Starting With Extra Time On Thursday

Edo Queens FC of Benin City will fly out to Cairo, Egypt, for the CAF Women's Champions League, but they will first have to play an outstanding extra-time against Ampem Darkoa Ladies of Ghana, Sports247 gathered. The extra-time hurdle comes after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) directed that the referee who officiated the Nigerian champions' match with the Ghanaians during the sub-regional qualifiers erred in ordering direct penalties after the game ended in a draw.

The Benin City-based side won the resultant shootout 4-3, but the Ghanaians lodged a protest with CAF, and their grievances were eventually acknowledged by the continental body, despite a counter appeal by Edo Queens. Consequently, Edo Queens have agreed to follow CAF's directive, and they are already bracing to scale the hurdle of extra time next week Thursday in order to enter the elite competition proper among champion clubs from other parts of Africa.

A press release from the team added, "Edo Queens Football Club has accepted the decision of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) that the outstanding extra time of the WAFU-B final against Ampem FC of Ghana be played on October 29, 2026, in Cairo, Egypt. The outcome of the appeal was not what we hoped for but, after consultations with the Edo State Government and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), we decided to complete the match in the interest of sporting fairness and so the contest can be settled on the pitch.

Our mission remains unchanged: to fight, to win and to secure our place in the CAF Women's Champions League, scheduled to begin in Cairo on November 1, 2026." Sports247 reports further that, while opting to 'move forward with courage, discipline and resilience,' Edo Queens thanked their fans and the media for their support during the appeal, then assured that their players and technical crew are ready to represent Nigeria with pride.
