Ex-Chelsea Boss Blasts Man City And Premier League Over Financial Scandal

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has questioned the Premier League's handling of Manchester City's financial breaches, claiming clubs were not competing under the same conditions. Pochettino was in charge of Spurs between 2014 and 2019, during which the north London club regularly challenged near the top of the Premier League despite operating under financial restrictions.

His comments come after reports that an independent commission found City guilty of the majority of the financial charges brought against them by the Premier League. City have consistently denied wrongdoing and are expected to appeal once the outcome of the case is officially confirmed.

The Argentine recalled how Tottenham went 18 months without signing a player while financing the construction of their new stadium, despite competing for major honours at the time. He questioned why financial regulations appeared to have such a significant impact on Spurs while alleged breaches elsewhere were not dealt with at the time.

"They were so strict with us but also so lenient with others," he said. "Because of that, that's why I say: it's all very strange.

"Whatever punishment [they choose], it's impossible to turn back time," he added.

"It's done a lot of damage, more than anything the guidelines. At the end of the day many clubs followed the rules and some didn't.

"

The former Chelsea boss also questioned what form an appropriate punishment could take, with financial sanctions and points deductions among the possibilities discussed following the reported verdict. Pochettino admitted finding an adequate solution would be difficult because the matches, competitions and achievements from the period have already taken place.
