Gareth Southgate gives update on potential Premier League return two years on from England exit

That disappointment followed another European Championship final appearance at Euro 2020, with Southgate taking the national side to successive finals in the competition. His only spell in club management came at Middlesbrough, where he spent three years in charge after taking the job in 2006.
Now, more than two years after leaving England, Southgate has offered an indication that a Premier League comeback doesn't appeal. Asked whether he would consider managing in the division again, he told The Amol Rajan Connection: "I don't see a scenario where I do that.
Southgate went on to explain how his relationship with football had changed, describing a period when success could no longer provide lasting satisfaction. Towards the end of my time with England, I stopped enjoying, at the very least for a period, the wins keep you going," he said.
"By the end, I didn't even enjoy the wins for any longer than a couple of minutes. I went to the FA Cup final to see my team, Crystal Palace, win their first trophy.
I've not been to a football ground since. So my sort of desire to be involved in football has changed.
His admission offers an insight into why a return to the dugout is not part of his plans. Rather than spending his time away preparing for another managerial position, Southgate has explored opportunities that extend beyond the game.
Those experiences have included media work and a BBC documentary examining the challenges facing young men and boys across the UK. He has also worked as a visiting lecturer at Harvard Business School in Boston, taking him into a different environment from the training ground and touchline.
For Southgate, that variety has brought enjoyment after decades in which football results shaped how he felt about himself. I've loved the last 18 months of my life," he added.
