Geoffrey Wasswa Opts for Ethiopia Return Over Interest from Ugandan Premier League Giants

The Uganda Cranes forward will continue plying his trade in Ethiopia after agreeing terms with Adama City. Uganda Cranes defender Geoffrey Wasswa has opted to extend his stay in Ethiopia after agreeing to terms with Adama City FC, turning down strong interest from domestic heavyweights Vipers SC and KCCA FC.

The versatile defender, who has cemented a solid reputation in the Ethiopian Premier League, finalised terms with Adama City in August 2026 to embark on a fresh chapter in his professional career abroad. Wasswa initially made the switch to Ethiopian football from KCCA in 2023, quickly making his mark with Ethiopian Coffee (Ethiopia Bunna).

During a two-season spell with the club, he lifted the Ethiopian Cup and earned a spot in the league's Best XI. His commanding performances subsequently secured him a two-year contract with Fasil Kenema in September 2025.

Both Vipers and KCCA had sought to entice Wasswa back to the Uganda Premier League, but his latest agreement ensures he will remain in Ethiopia for the foreseeable future. The defender enjoyed considerable success in his homeland earlier in his career, winning two league titles and a Uganda Cup with Vipers before joining SC Villa in 2020 and KCCA ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

Primarily deployed as a central defender, Wasswa also offers tactical flexibility with his ability to operate in defensive midfield. Wasswa's transfer highlights the continued presence of Ugandan talent across Ethiopia's top division.

Among the notable figures is Allan Kayiwa, who celebrated winning the Ethiopian league championship with Ethiopian Insurance in June 2025 following a stint at Shashemene Kenema. A host of other Ugandan players have also plied their trade in the competition, including Simon Peter Lokech (CBE), Brian Aheebwa (Arba Minch), Nafian Alionzi (Mechal), Thomas Ikara (Sidama Bunna), Charles Musiige (Dire Dawa), Martin Kizza (Fasil Kenema), Alex Kitata (Shire), alongside Wolwalo duo Fahad Bayo and Musa Ramathan.
