Hamburg climb in Bundesliga, Toulouse win in Ligue 1

Shafiq Nandja and Albert Grønbæk scored second-half goals to break a deadlock and help Hamburg climb in the Bundesliga standings with a 3-1 victory over struggling Borussia Mönchengladbach. Miro Muheim put the Hamburg hosts ahead in the 11th minute but Joe Scally equalised on halftime.
Nandja restored the lead in the 59th and Grønbæk sealed the win in the 70th. Hamburg were in eighth place as the ninth round of the Bundesliga got underway.
Mönchengladbach, who began the season with six consecutive defeats, remain last with only one win. In France's Ligue 1, Toulouse secured an important win when Santiago Hidalgo, Mark McKenzie and Thomas Jorgensen scored in a 3-1 victory over Strasbourg.
It marked Toulouse's second victory from their last four starts to move them to 10th place. Ex-Borussia Dortmund player Giovanni Reyna pulled a goal back for Strasbourg but they have now lost five of their last six matches and sit 13th in the 18-team table.
In Serie A, Venezia climbed off the bottom of the league when Kike Pérez scored the winner in a 2-1 result against Udinese. All the goals came after halftime, and all by Venetians.
Matías Moreno's own goal levelled the score. Udinese replaced Venezia on the bottom of the table and the results have cost manager Kosta Runjaic his job as he was replaced midweek by Paolo Zanetti.
In Spain, Sevilla failed to capitalise on home-ground advantage in drawing with Alavés 0-0, though the single point was enough to keep them sixth in La Liga. After a match that saw only five shots on target, Sevilla secured a spot in the Conference League, a position it could yet lose if Athletic Bilbao beat Osasuna on Saturday.
Alavés sit in ninth place but a specific combination of results could see them drop down the table. In England, Everton beat Coventry City 3-1 in the Premier League while Derby County defeated Bolton by the same scoreline in the second-tier Championship.
