How lower league side Fleetwood diminished EPL champions Arsenal in Carabao Cup clash

Spread the word Arsenal's expensively assembled squad, valued at approximately €1.4 billion, suffered one of the most remarkable shocks in English football after being eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Fleetwood Town, whose squad is valued at less than €3 million. The reigning Premier League champions were knocked out by the League Two side following a 5-3 penalty shootout defeat after the fourth-round tie ended 1-1 at Highbury Stadium on Tuesday night.

Blueprint reports The result made Fleetwood the first League Two club to eliminate the reigning English top-flight champions from the League Cup, underlining the extraordinary contrast between the financial resources of both teams. While Arsenal's squad value stands at around €1.39 billion on one current valuation, Fleetwood's is estimated at approximately €2.8 million to €2.9 million.

The difference means Arsenal's squad is worth roughly 475 to 500 times that of their opponents, depending on the valuation used. The defeat was particularly striking because Fleetwood entered the contest struggling in the fourth tier of English football, sitting 18th in the League Two table, while Arsenal arrived as reigning Premier League champions.

A financial mismatch that football could not settle The figures illustrate the widening financial gap between clubs at the top of English football and those operating in its lower divisions. Arsenal's valuation reflects a squad containing established internationals, highly rated young players and footballers whose transfer-market values run into tens of millions of euros.

Fleetwood, by comparison, operate with a fraction of those resources. Their squad is made up of players competing in England's fourth tier, where clubs generally work with considerably smaller budgets and less expensive playing personnel.

Yet the difference in market value did not translate into a comfortable Arsenal victory. The result is a reminder that squad valuation measures the estimated market worth of players, not the outcome of a particular match.

Tactical organisation, individual mistakes, discipline, goalkeeping and the pressure of a knockout contest can all influence the result. Fleetwood demonstrated those qualities against an Arsenal side whose individual players, on paper, were worth vastly more than the entire opposition squad.

How Fleetwood pulled off the upset Fleetwood made their opportunity count when Aaron Loupalo-Bi opened the scoring in the 21st minute, putting the home side ahead and giving the League Two supporters reason to believe that an upset was possible. Arsenal responded after the interval, with striker Viktor Gyökeres restoring parity in the 50th minute.

The Premier League champions subsequently searched for a winner but were unable to turn their possession and attacking options into another goal. Fleetwood remained organised and defended resolutely, forcing the tie into a penalty shootout after neither side could find a decisive second goal during regulation time.
