HSG Blomberg Suffers 18:35 Defeat Against Odense in EHF Champions League

HSG Blomberg-Lippe fell 18-35 to Odense Håndbold in the EHF Champions League at the Phoenix Contact Arena, marking their fifth defeat in the European competition. Playing in their fifth EHF Champions League campaign, the Blomberg side hosted the Danish top team for their fourth home match of the tournament.
The hosts struggled early in the match, failing to secure defensive stops and missing multiple scoring chances against an aggressive Odense defense. Early Deficit and Tactical Adjustments in the First Half Head coach Steffen Birkner started the match with Nicole Roth, Alexia Hauf, Nieke Kühne, Nuria Bucher, Díana Magnúsdóttir, Farrelle Njinkeu, and Maxi Mühlner.
Odense, led by interim coach Mark Strandgaard, opened with Viola Leuchter in the right backcourt and Johanna Bundsen in goal. The first ten minutes saw Blomberg fail to find a defensive rhythm, resulting in a 0-5 deficit.
Birkner called an early timeout and substituted Isabelle Axmann for Díana Magnúsdóttir. Axmann scored Blomberg's first goal in the eleventh minute, helping settle the attack alongside Kühne and Bucher.
A save by Nicole Roth against Daria Vyakhireva sparked a brief counter-attacking spell for the hosts. Magnúsdóttir lobbed the ball over Bundsen to make it 7-12, and Njinkeu converted a fast break to narrow the gap to 8-12.
Odense responded with a timeout and shifted to a seven-on-six tactical formation. Halilcevic scored from the wing against Roth, and Jurenczyk received a suspension, leaving Blomberg shorthanded as the visitors extended their lead.
Bucher scored the final goal of the first half from a seven-meter penalty, sending Blomberg into the locker room trailing 10-20. Second-Half Resistance and Defensive Shifts Blomberg introduced Judith Tietjen, Lilli Röpcke, and Laura Rüffieux at the start of the second half.
The tactical changes helped stabilize the defense, restricting Odense to just three goals in the opening ten minutes of the second period. Roth recorded multiple saves, while Röpcke capitalized on a rebound to score Blomberg's twelfth goal.
Despite improved defensive work, Blomberg struggled to break down Odense's goalkeeping tandem of Johanna Bundsen and later Yara Ten Holte. Bundsen and Ten Holte repeatedly denied Blomberg shooters in direct duels, while turnovers allowed Odense to punish the hosts on fast breaks into an empty net.
