"I still don't know what he offers to this team" - Fans slam Manchester City star after loss to Brighton in Premier League clash
Fans have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to call out Manchester City star Enzo Fernandez after their shock 1-0 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion in a Premier League fixture. Manchester City took on the same opponent for the second time in the same week as they hosted the Seagulls.
Earlier in the week, the Cityzens came out victors after a penalty shootout in the fourth round of the EFL Cup. The visitors took the lead in the 11th minute after an error from Mateus Nunes allowed Maxim De Cuyper to pass the ball across the 6-yard box to Yasin Ayari, who tapped the ball into a near-empty net.
The Manchester-based side created a few chances but were not able to dispatch them. The Cityzens were the better team for most of the game, but they came up against a determined Brighton side.
The home side had 21 total shots with 6 on target, whereas the Seagulls only had 7 shots with 3 on target. Enzo Maresca 's side also had more possession and completed more passes than Fabian Hürzeler's team on the day.
One player who was criticized by fans for his performance was Enzo Fernandez. The Argentine midfielder did not have a big impact on the game and was substituted out after 64 minutes.
According to Sofascore, he had 39 touches in the game and lost possession 10 times. One fan was bemused by what the Manchester City midfielder offered and questioned the high fee the club paid to sign him from Chelsea in the 2026 summer window: 125 million on Enzo Fernandez.
I still don't know what he offers to this team 😭 A second fan echoed the sentiment and claimed signing the Argentine was a mistake: @gojocidaI I repeatedly said. Signing Enzo Fernandez was a mistake, there is nothing good about him A third fan claimed Fernandez would be the end of Enzo Maresca at Man City: Enzo Fernandez will be the end of Maresca Some of the other reactions are as follows: @mancityroom Don't ever put Cherki on the bench over Enzo Fernandez.
Whether Cherki plays well or not, at least he provides more creative chances compared to Enzo Fernandez. Honestly, Semenyo might not be the best at dribbling, but his effectiveness is better than Ndiaye and Doku.
genuinely painful to watch him play Manchester City remain top of the Premier League table for the time being, as closest challengers Arsenal have not played their weekend game yet. The Gunners will take on Liverpool at Anfield; if they win, they will leapfrog the Cityzens to the top of the PL.
