Indian Football Team Rival Watch: Uruguay

La Celeste will face India at the VYBK Stadium on October 6, 2026. The Indian national team have been in for a bumper ride during the September-October international window, with three FIFA World Cup-playing nations lined up as opponents within just 12 days.

Now, the Blue Tigers are nearing the end of this challenging run as they prepare for the final chapter of this historic journey. India will take on Uruguay, who are ranked 20th in the FIFA World Rankings, at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on October 6, 2026.

The international friendly is scheduled to kick off at 19:30 IST. Khalid Jamil and his boys have so far lived up to the excitement and expectations of Indian football fans.

One could even argue that they have exceeded expectations, having secured a draw against Panama in the opening game before losing 0-4 to Brazil in the second. This was despite widespread predictions that India would suffer a heavy defeat, potentially conceding double-digit goals against Carlo Ancelotti's side.

Despite failing to register a win in either game, Khalid Jamil's side have displayed a positive mentality and looked dangerous on the counterattack, particularly through quick transitions. This is an encouraging development, given the lack of attacking output the team has displayed over the past 12-18 months.

With renewed hope and one final challenge awaiting them, the Blue Tigers will now face La Celeste. Let's take a look at Uruguay's recent form, head coach and key players ahead of the game.

Recent form MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA - JUNE 21: Uruguay players pose for a team photograph before the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Uruguay and Cabo Verde at Miami Stadium on June 21, 2026 in Miami Gardens, Florida. They began the year with two draws against England and Algeria during the March international window.

The two-time World Cup champions then entered the 2026 FIFA World Cup without playing any warm-up friendlies, following a request from then-head coach Marcelo Bielsa. In hindsight, that decision backfired unfortunately.

La Celeste failed to win a single game and were eliminated in the group stage after finishing third with just two points from three matches. During the current international window, Uruguay played two friendlies against Asian opposition ahead of their trip to India.
