Jamie Carragher backs Arsenal's title approach but questions Champions League prospects

Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal's pragmatic playing style gives them a strong chance of retaining the Premier League title, but has questioned whether the same approach can deliver Champions League success. Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, the former Liverpool defender discussed Arsenal's impressive consistency under manager Mikel Arteta and the challenges facing the reigning English champions.
Arsenal have made a strong start to their title defence, winning seven of their opening eight league matches and conceding few goals. Their latest victory came against Everton on Saturday, when goals from Ezri Konsa and Gabriel Magalhaes secured a 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium.
Carragher raised questions about whether Arsenal would benefit from adopting a more expansive approach after criticism of their narrow victory at Nottingham Forest. However, he suggested that pursuing more attractive football could potentially undermine the qualities responsible for their domestic success.
The pundit compared Arsenal's situation with Liverpool's previous title-winning campaign, when attempts to improve their attacking performances preceded a difficult subsequent season. Carragher recalled discussing Liverpool's narrow victories with their manager and the desire to become more convincing in attack despite winning the championship.
He suggested Arsenal should be wary of making similar changes while their existing system continues to produce results. The former England international also highlighted the significance of retaining the Premier League title, something Arsenal have never achieved since the competition's introduction in 1992.
However, Carragher expressed greater reservations about their European prospects. "When I do watch you play, I think it'd be very difficult for you to win the Champions League," he said.
The 48-year-old argued that Arsenal benefited from a favourable route to last season's final, where they eventually lost to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties. He questioned whether Arteta's side could expect similarly favourable circumstances in another European campaign.
An Arsenal supporter on the programme defended the team's approach, pointing to their victories, defensive consistency and impressive results against strong opposition. He cited Arsenal's recent sequence of a league win at Nottingham Forest, a Champions League draw at Bayern Munich and another clean sheet against Everton.
Former Everton captain Seamus Coleman also praised Arsenal's defensive organisation, recruitment and togetherness. Coleman highlighted Declan Rice's influence in midfield while acknowledging concerns about attacking depth following Bukayo Saka's injury.
