FC Schalke 04 head coach Miron Muslic took full responsibility for his team's tactical mistakes following Sunday's dramatic 2-1 Bundesliga defeat against SC Freiburg. The Austrian-Bosnian trainer's unusually candid admission prompted an extraordinary response from Freiburg counterpart Julian Schuster, who interrupted his own opening remarks at the post-match press conference to praise Muslic's honesty.
Sunday's encounter at the Europa-Park-Stadion saw Freiburg initially dominate proceedings and take a tenth-minute lead through Maximilian Eggestein. Schalke nevertheless recovered and equalised through Bundesliga debutant Adrian Gantenbein in the 30th minute.
The visitors subsequently improved considerably after halftime and appeared well positioned to pursue a victory when Freiburg midfielder Yuito Suzuki received his second yellow card in the 64th minute. Muslic responded to the numerical advantage by making a series of substitutions and altering Schalke's tactical structure.
His attempts to push for a winning goal ultimately backfired, however, as Freiburg substitutes Vincenzo Grifo and Keisuke Goto combined for an 85th-minute winner. Muslic initially introduced Edin Dzeko and Ron Schallenberg for Junior Adamu and Satoshi Tanaka in the 69th minute, refreshing both his attacking options and central midfield.
Ten minutes later, the coach made three further substitutions. Hee-chan Hwang replaced Moussa Sylla, Timo Becker took over from Maximilian Wober, and attacking midfielder Adil Aouchiche entered in place of right-sided wing-back Adrian Gantenbein.
The final change was particularly noteworthy.
