Kane makes English football history after thrilling Ballon d'Or victory

England captain Harry Kane defeated France forward Kylian Mbappe by just 28 points to win the 2026 men's Ballon d'Or. The Bayern Munich striker collected 1,055 points, narrowly finishing ahead of Real Madrid's Mbappe, who received 1,027.
The result represents one of the tightest finishes in the history of football's most prestigious individual award. Kane's success makes him the first English player to receive the Ballon d'Or since Michael Owen claimed the honour in 2001.
Meanwhile, Mbappe secured his highest-ever position in the competition, finishing comfortably ahead of third-placed Lamine Yamal. The Spain forward accumulated 881 points, leaving him 146 behind Mbappe and 174 short of Kane's winning total.
The narrow difference between the two leading players makes this year's contest the closest since 2019, when Argentina's Lionel Messi defeated Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk by only seven points. There have also been two occasions when the men's Ballon d'Or was decided by a single point, highlighting just how competitive the award has been throughout its history.
The first of those dramatic finishes came in 1966, when England's Bobby Charlton narrowly defeated Portugal's Eusebio following their respective performances in football. Charlton, who was later knighted, secured the award by the smallest possible margin.
A similar outcome followed in 1996, when Germany defender Matthias Sammer finished just one point ahead of Brazilian striker Ronaldo. Mbappe could draw encouragement from Ronaldo's experience.
Despite missing out on the award in 1996, the Brazilian went on to win it the following year and claimed the honour again in 2002. Ronaldo, who presented Kane with his Ballon d'Or trophy at a ceremony in London on Monday, therefore has personal experience of both narrowly losing and subsequently achieving football's highest individual recognition.
Kane's victory was built on an outstanding goalscoring campaign during which he found the net 73 times in 65 appearances last season. His contribution helped Bayern Munich secure a league and cup double, while he also played a leading role in England's campaign at the World Cup, where the national team finished third.
Those achievements proved decisive in a competition where the final outcome was separated by a relatively small number of votes. The Ballon d'Or winner is selected through a voting process involving 100 journalists.
