Kawempe Muslim Stun Defending Champions AS FAR Rabat in CAF Champions League

Kawempe Muslim Ladies made a winning debut in the CAF Women's Champions League after Agnes Nabukenya scored in stoppage time to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory over defending champions AS FAR Rabat on Monday. Nabukenya struck in the fourth minute of added time at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia, completing a remarkable comeback for the CECAFA champions in their opening Group B fixture.

The Moroccan side took an early lead in the sixth minute through Fatima Tagnaout, who capitalised on a defensive lapse to put AS FAR ahead. Kawempe Muslim went into the break trailing but returned with renewed determination, with Nabukenya restoring parity in the 53rd minute before Shakirah Nyingahirwa put the Ugandan side ahead five minutes later.

AS FAR responded through Doha El Madani, who levelled the scores and appeared to have salvaged a draw for the defending champions. However, Nabukenya had the final say, finding the net deep into stoppage time to hand Kawempe all three points in their first appearance at the continental tournament.

The result puts Kawempe second in Group B with three points, behind Ghana's Ampem Darkoa Ladies, who lead on goal difference after defeating Mali's USFAS Bamako 5-1. AS FAR Rabat and USFAS Bamako occupy the bottom two positions following their opening defeats.

Kawempe's next assignment is against Ampem Darkoa Ladies, with the Ugandan side looking to build on its opening victory and strengthen its chances of reaching the semi-finals. The team qualified for the continental tournament after winning the CECAFA Women's Champions League qualifiers in Rwanda, where it defeated Kenya Police Bullets 1-0 in the final.

The 2026 CAF Women's Champions League, organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), is the sixth edition of the continental club competition. The tournament is being held in Egypt from November 1 to 15.
