Lamine Yamal breaks Kylian Mbappe's Champions League record after Aston Villa mistake

Lamine Yamal became the highest-scoring player in Champions League history before turning 20 after capitalising on a defensive error to give Barcelona an early lead against Aston Villa. The 19-year-old struck after only eight minutes of Tuesday evening's league-phase meeting at Camp Nou, finding the net with a composed finish after Joao Gomes misplaced a pass inside the penalty area.

The goal took Yamal's Champions League tally to 14 in the competition, with the Barcelona forward aged 19 years and 113 days, according to statistics outlet Mr Chip. He surpassed the previous record held jointly by Kylian Mbappe, who scored 13 Champions League goals before reaching his 20th birthday.

The Real Madrid forward is now second on the list. Erling Haaland is third with 10 goals, while Patrick Kluivert follows with seven.

Raul Gonzalez, Karim Benzema and Jude Bellingham have each scored six goals in the competition before turning 20. Yamal's achievement also marked a significant milestone for Barcelona under manager Hansi Flick.

According to Stats Foot, his goal against Aston Villa was Barcelona's 50th at home in the Champions League during Flick's tenure. The landmark was reached across the 15 matches the club have played in the competition with the German in charge.

Barcelona's goal came after Aston Villa were unable to deal with Joao Gomes' misplaced pass in their own penalty area. Yamal seized on the opportunity and produced a precise finish to put the home side ahead early in the fourth round of the Champions League league phase.

The strike added another record to Yamal's rapidly developing European career, while also extending Barcelona's run of home goals in the competition under Flick.
