Latvian Football Federation Backs Infantino and Čeferin

Latvian Football Federation official Vadims Ļašenko has publicly pledged loyalty to FIFA President Gianni Infantino while simultaneously nominating UEFA chief Aleksander Čeferin for another term. The diplomatic tightrope began in late September when Infantino made an unannounced visit to Riga to open the Latvian Football Federation's new office.

Following the visit, Ļašenko declared to the public that Latvia will always stand by the FIFA leader. Just weeks later, however, the Latvian federation officially nominated Aleksander Čeferin to remain at the helm of the Union of European Football Associations.

Commercial Rights Dispute Erupts Between FIFA and UEFA Tensions boiled over during the summer when Infantino attempted to sell a multi-billion-dollar stake in FIFA's premier tournament commercial rights to private investors. Following intense resistance from several confederations, the plan was frozen.

By late September, Čeferin delivered a scathing address to European club representatives. The UEFA president compared Infantino to the monarch in Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, declaring that the king is naked and warning that Infantino has lost trust.

Financial Proposals and Governance Scrutiny Ahead of Elections Infantino faces next March's presidential election backed by a substantial funding proposal for national associations. According to reports from the Associated Press, FIFA plans to distribute 25 miljonus ASV dolāru to each of its 211 member associations over the next four-year cycle, raising the previous ten-million-dollar allocation to a total development funding pool of 6,35 miljardus dolāru.

The British newspaper The Times revealed that in 2024, the FIFA president received an additional 1,76 miljonus dolāru from a US-registered company involved in World Cup organization. That payout does not appear in Infantino's 2024 financial disclosures, despite FIFA statutes requiring the public disclosure of executive compensation in annual reports.

The March Presidential Election and Regulatory Review UEFA leadership and allied confederation officials are actively searching for a candidate to challenge and potentially replace Infantino at the upcoming FIFA presidential election in March.
