Mamelodi Sundowns Held to Goalless Draw by Wiliete SC in CAF Champions League First Leg - Diski 365

Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Wiliete SC in the first leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round on Sunday evening. The South African champions created several promising opportunities but could not find the breakthrough against a determined Angolan side at the Estadio Nacional da Tundavala.

Despite enjoying attacking moments and putting pressure on the hosts, Sundowns were repeatedly denied by Wiliete goalkeeper Elber and a well-organised defensive unit. The result leaves the tie finely balanced ahead of the return leg in South Africa next weekend, where Sundowns will look to use home advantage to secure their place in the next round.

However, the Brazilians will also be concerned about the first-half injury suffered by midfielder Teboho Mokoena, whose condition could become an important factor in their preparations for the decisive encounter. Sundowns entered the match looking to establish an advantage in their pursuit of another successful CAF Champions League campaign.

As African champions, the Pretoria-based club carry significant expectations whenever they compete on the continental stage, particularly in matches where progression depends on performances across two legs. Head coach Miguel Cardoso made changes to his starting line-up following the midweek victory over Richards Bay.

Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ricardo Goss started in place of Ronwen Williams, while Fawaaz Basadien featured at left-back in the absence of Aubrey Modiba. These adjustments gave other members of the squad an opportunity to contribute while Sundowns sought a positive result away from home.

Wiliete SC also had reasons to approach the encounter with confidence after progressing through the first preliminary round. The Angolan side included former Orlando Pirates winger Gilberto in their starting line-up, giving South African football supporters a familiar name to follow.

Gilberto had already scored during the opening preliminary round and was looking to add another goal to his continental campaign. Wiliete's approach focused on maintaining defensive discipline while looking for opportunities to threaten Sundowns in attack.

Their ability to frustrate the visitors throughout the match demonstrated their determination to remain competitive against one of Africa's leading club sides. Sundowns began the contest with attacking intent and nearly took the lead during the opening stages.

Brayan Leon managed to get behind the Wiliete defence and produced an effort that appeared destined for the net, only for a defender to clear the ball off the line. The early opportunity showed that Sundowns could exploit spaces behind the home side's defensive structure.
