Man City face ultimate test of perfect Premier League start against resurgent Aston Villa

Manchester City's perfect start to the Premier League season faces one of its sternest examinations on Saturday when they visit an Aston Villa side rediscovering their best form. Seven victories from seven league matches have established Enzo Maresca's team as the early title favourites, but extending that record at Villa Park will be far from straightforward.

City have already demonstrated their attacking quality and resilience, most recently overcoming Ipswich Town 3-2 before dismantling AEK Athens 5-1 in the Champions League. However, Villa present a different challenge, particularly given their recent success against the league leaders.

Unai Emery's team have won four of their last six Premier League meetings with City, including three consecutive home encounters. Villa also completed a league double over the Citizens last season, suggesting their tactical approach is particularly effective against this opposition.

Although Villa endured a difficult opening to the campaign, their recent performances indicate that they are finally finding their rhythm. Wednesday's 3-1 Champions League victory over Viking FK extended their unbeaten run across all competitions to seven matches.

The result followed an impressive 6-0 European triumph against Fenerbahce and a hard-fought Premier League victory away to Newcastle United. Villa have now won all three Champions League fixtures this season, providing further evidence of their growing confidence.

Their domestic position remains less impressive, with Emery's side sitting 12th after collecting eight points from seven matches. However, that standing arguably disguises the improvement they have shown in recent weeks.

Villa are still searching for their first home league victory this season, making Saturday's encounter an opportunity to demonstrate that their European form can translate into domestic success. City, meanwhile, possess enough attacking quality to punish even the smallest defensive mistakes.

Erling Haaland's availability provides a significant boost, while Phil Foden arrives after scoring a Champions League hat-trick against AEK Athens. Nevertheless, the absence of injured winger Antoine Semenyo reduces Maresca's attacking options.

The tactical contest between Emery and Maresca should be fascinating, with Villa's organisation and ability to exploit space potentially troubling City's possession-based approach. City will naturally expect to dominate the ball, but their recent difficulties against Villa suggest control alone will not guarantee victory.
