Man United vs Tottenham: How Bruno Fernandes and Mateus Fernandes compare before Premier League clash

Bruno Fernandes and Mateus Fernandes - Photo by Iconsport/Azzuu/SUSA On Saturday evening, two players who could quite easily have been playing on the same team this season will go head-to-head in the middle of the park as Man United face Tottenham at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes, the reigning PFA Players' Player of the Year, will line up against his namesake, Mateus Fernandes, at Old Trafford, with the result potentially hinging on which Fernandes has the better game.

Here, FootballWhispers takes a look at how Bruno and Mateus compare from a statistical standpoint, using league data from the 2026/27 season. As the Man Utd man has played nearly double the number of minutes of Mateus Fernandes, we have opted to look at their 'per 90' stats, to make the comparison as fair as possible.

After breaking the Premier League assists record last season, it has been a slow start for Bruno in goal contributions this season, but he is still outperforming his Spurs rival, with 0.2 assists per 90 and 0.6 per goals per 90 to Mateus' 0 in both metrics. Bruno's appetite for risk-taking means he is less reliable in possession than Mateus, though.

So are this season, the Man Utd man has a Premier League pass completion of 84.9%, while Mateus has an impressive 95.3%. Mateus Fernandes is also a player more prepared to enter physical duels in the middle of the park.

He been involved in more duels than Bruno (8.28 per 90 to 5 per 90) and has come out on top in more (3.6 to 1.8). The most surprising stat comparison is in chance creation.

Since Bruno joined the Premier League six years ago, no other player has created more big chances than him. However, this season, Mateus Fernandes is outperforming him, with 0.72 chances created per 90 minutes to Bruno's 0.2 As the season continues, we anticipate Bruno to get back on top on this metric, but it's an interesting subplot to note ahead of the match on Saturday.
