Injury updates in international breaks invariably take a negative slant for the game's club sides, as Manchester United can attest already this fall. However, Michael Carrick was able to welcome Carlos Baleba and Matthijs de Ligt onto the pitch in a rare flicker of positive fitness news.
This elongated club hiatus has been so long that United found the time to stage a friendly with sister side Lausanne Sport. De Ligt underwent surgery on a nagging back problem in May which ruled out any involvement in this summer's World Cup.
The Dutch defender returned to first-team training in recent weeks and took his recovery up another level by featuring for United in this behind-closed-doors friendly. It remains to be seen when De Ligt will be ready for a competitive return, although the Manchester Evening News suggest it could be as soon as next weekend's Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur.
