Manchester City condemn Liverpool to joint-heaviest Premier League defeat at Anfield

Liverpool suffered their joint-heaviest home defeat in Premier League history as Manchester City secured a 3-0 victory at Anfield on Sunday. The result means Liverpool have never lost a Premier League match at Anfield by more than three goals.

Their two heaviest defeats in the competition remain 4-1 losses against Chelsea in 2005 and Manchester City in 2021. Those results are followed by three 3-0 defeats: against West Ham in 2015, Nottingham Forest in 2025 and Manchester City on Sunday.

City's victory was sealed by three goals in a 13-minute spell after Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was sent off in the 62nd minute for a second yellow card. Erling Haaland opened the scoring in the 65th minute, before Belgian winger Jeremy Doku doubled City's advantage three minutes later.

French forward Rayan Cherki completed the scoring in the 78th minute. Liverpool's defence struggled to recover after Gravenberch's dismissal, with City taking full control of the match and adding to their lead in quick succession.

The win keeps Manchester City at the top of the Premier League, with a perfect record of 18 points from six matches. Liverpool remain on nine points in ninth place.

City's next fixture is at home to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday at the Etihad Stadium in the first round of the Champions League. The match was Manchester City's first since an independent commission found the club had breached Premier League financial rules over a nine-year period.

Manchester City have appealed against the ruling. The defeat also marked another difficult home result for Liverpool against City, who had previously won 4-1 at Anfield in 2021.

A 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest in 2025 and the defeat by West Ham in 2015 are the other results to match Sunday's margin since the Premier League began.
