Martin Karikari volley sends Hearts of Oak top of Ghana Premier League

Martin Karikari scored a late winner to hand Hearts of Oak a 1-0 victory over Basake Holy Stars on Friday, moving the Phobians to the top of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League table after eight matches. The attacking midfielder produced a superb volley at the University of Ghana Stadium to settle a closely fought contest and extend Hearts' winning run to three matches.
The victory follows earlier wins over FC Port City and Vision FC, keeping the Phobians in strong form as they continue their push near the top of the standings. Hearts now lead the league by three points, although the remaining Matchday 8 fixtures are scheduled for Sunday.
The hosts controlled much of the game and created the better scoring opportunities, recording 17 shots, 10 more than Basake Holy Stars. However, the visitors proved difficult to break down, maintaining a compact defensive shape to frustrate Hearts while looking for opportunities to threaten on the counterattack.
Ransford Mensah came close to giving Hearts the lead with a powerful free-kick that struck the post, leaving the home side still searching for a breakthrough. Karikari eventually made the difference with a moment of individual brilliance.
The midfielder used a couple of clever shimmies to create space before unleashing a stunning volley past the goalkeeper. His goal proved decisive, securing all three points for Hearts of Oak and sending their supporters into celebration.
