Martin Keown has described Gabriel Magalhaes as "a legend of the football club" after the defender marked his 200th Premier League appearance with the goal that sealed Arsenal 's 2-0 win over Everton. Gabriel headed in Ben White's cross in the 68th minute at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, after Ezri Konsa had put the hosts ahead in the seventh minute.

The win took Mikel Arteta 's side to 21 points from eight matches, level with Manchester City, who lost 2-1 at Aston Villa earlier in the day. The North London club stay second on goal difference.

Konsa, a £55m summer signing from Aston Villa, scored his first goal for the club from a corner. Everton, ninth on 10 points, have now lost two league games in a row.

Keown, speaking on BBC's Match of the Day, said (via Metro UK ): "Gabriel is into his sixth season at Arsenal now, and this guy is just a machine. You rarely see a striker get the better of him.

I've seen him mature a lot and become the leader at the back. He just loves defending and the fans just buzz about him.

He's a legend of the football club now." Keown also rated Gabriel's partnership with Konsa as the best in the division. "You look at that partnership with Gabriel, I don't see a better one in the Premier League right now," he said.

Arteta called it "a big win" after a demanding run of fixtures. "We knew we had a very good opponent in front of us but, overall, we had a good performance and fully deserved to win," he told BBC Match of the Day.

The victory was Arsenal's seventh in eight league games and their third in a row. Gabriel's Arsenal record: goals, assists and clean sheets Gabriel arrived from Lille in September 2020 and has scored more Premier League goals than any other defender since.

His header against Everton was his 21st in his 200th appearance.
