Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Carrick delivered a damning assessment of his team's display. I think everybody has got to take responsibility for that, he said.

"I 100% take responsibility for the overall team and the performance - that's where it stops. It stops with me and I'm absolutely fine with that.

But as a supporter of this football club for so long, to see a performance like that is unacceptable, I have to say." Manchester United boss apologises to travelling supporters Carrick was particularly disappointed for the United fans who had travelled to Italy to support their team. The 45-year-old stressed the importance of the club's supporters and admitted he felt compelled to apologise for what they had witnessed.

"I care an unbelievable amount about the supporters," Carrick said. "They are the heartbeat of this football club and they always will be.

For them to travel, I had to apologise for the performance. To have to watch a performance like that, I totally feel for them.

There are no excuses at all."

With pressure mounting over his position, Carrick was also asked whether he still had the backing of Manchester United's board.

However, he refused to discuss his own future, insisting his immediate focus was on assessing the performance.
