Nestory Irankunda announces himself with Champions League debut to remember as Sporting coach delivers verdict on Socceroo's performance

Nestory Irankunda set up a goal as the Socceroos star capped his UEFA Champions League debut with an assist for Sporting CP. Irankunda was the provider for Luis Suarez's 22nd-minute opener in Sporting's 2-0 win away to French club Lens on Wednesday (AEDT).

It was the Australia international's second assist in two matches for the Portuguese giants, who made it two wins from two games in the Champions League this term. Irankunda, who arrived from EFL Championship outfit Watford in a big-money transfer at the start of the season, also created two chances, won three ground duels, finished with four recoveries, six touches in the opposition box and 38 touches overall in a 73-minute display.

"He's played well and today he played a great game," said Sporting head coach Rui Borges. "He comes from the English second division and wasn't used to playing in the Champions League.

I gave him a hug because he was laughing. He's a 'clown' in a good way, he's always laughing and happy.

He made the best decision in coming to Sporting and we are very happy with a young player who has a lot of potential. I have no doubt that he will have an increasing impact on the team's decisions.

Sporting, meanwhile, are third in the Portuguese top tier and six points off the pace through eight rounds. By commenting, you agree to our Commenting Guidelines"
