Paris Saint-Germain hit Villarreal for six in record-breaking Champions League win

Paris Saint-Germain produced a historic 6-0 victory over Villarreal on matchday four of the Champions League league phase, recording the biggest away win in the club's history in European competition. The French side raced into an unassailable lead inside 17 minutes.
Joao Neves opened the scoring in the ninth minute before a mistake by Villarreal goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi allowed Desire Doue to make it 2-0 three minutes later. Senny Mayulu added a third in the 13th minute, with Fabian Ruiz completing an extraordinary opening spell four minutes after that.
Ruiz struck again five minutes into the second half to make it 5-0. Teenage substitute David Boly then added the sixth in the 78th minute, only a few minutes after coming on, completing a dominant display for Luis Enrique's team.
According to Stats Foot, Paris Saint-Germain scored four times in just eight minutes, with the goals coming in the ninth, 12th, 13th and 17th minutes. That made them the first team in Champions League history to score four goals in a shorter period - 16 minutes and two seconds in total.
They also scored three times in the opening 13 minutes, the fastest an away side has reached three goals in the competition. The previous record belonged to Borussia Dortmund, who scored their third goal in the 17th minute against Legia in 2016.
The result also ended a long wait for a French club to win a Champions League away match by six goals. Paris Saint-Germain became the first since Olympique Lyonnais defeated Dinamo Zagreb 7-1 on 7 December 2011.
Paris Saint-Germain are only the second club in the competition's history to beat a Spanish side by a six-goal margin. The first were Bayern Munich, who defeated Barcelona 8-2 on 14 August 2020.
The French club also set another landmark by becoming the first team to score six away goals against a Spanish opponent in the Champions League. The previous best was Monaco's five-goal haul against Deportivo La Coruna on 8 December 2004.
Paris Saint-Germain have now gone 14 Champions League matches without defeat, with 10 wins and four draws. That run matches the competition's best unbeaten sequence, previously set by Lyon between December 2004 and March 2006.
