Premier League 2026/27: Manchester City Lead the Race as Arsenal Chase at the Top

The 2026/27 Premier League season is beginning to take shape, and the early title race is already producing plenty of excitement, with Manchester City currently sitting at the top of the table while defending champions Arsenal remain close behind. After five matches, Manchester City have made a perfect start, winning all five of their league games to collect 15 points.

Arsenal are second on 12 points after four victories and one defeat. Brighton sit third on 10 points, while Brentford, Leeds United, Liverpool and Everton are among the teams completing the early group near the European places.

For Arsenal, the start has nevertheless been encouraging despite their position below City. Mikel Arteta's side opened their campaign with a 3-0 victory over Coventry City before beating Aston Villa 1-0 away from home and Chelsea 2-1 at the Emirates.

They then defeated Sunderland 2-0 before suffering their first setback of the campaign in a 3-0 defeat away to Brighton. The Chelsea victory was particularly significant because Arsenal had to come from behind after Morgan Rogers gave the visitors an early lead.

Kai Havertz equalised before Martin Ødegaard scored the winner as Arsenal maintained their unbeaten start at that point. Manchester City, meanwhile, have been perfect through the opening five matches.

Their latest run included a 1-0 victory over Coventry City, a result that helped them establish themselves at the summit before later victories extended their perfect record. Opta's analysis described City as the only side with a 100 per cent record after five matches.

The early standings also show that the Premier League is already producing some unexpected developments. Brighton have made an impressive start and were sitting third after five matches, while Brentford, Leeds and Everton were also above several traditionally prominent clubs.

Manchester United, meanwhile, had five points from their first five matches, while Tottenham were struggling near the bottom of the table with only two points at that stage. The early season has therefore already produced a fascinating contrast between the defending champions and their main challengers.
