Rangers' resilience praised after hard-fought CAF Champions League win

Former Nigeria defender Chikelue Iloenyosi has praised Rangers International for their resilience after they secured a 2-0 win over MC Alger in the first leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round. Rangers had to work hard against a stubborn Algerian defence but struck twice late in the match to take a valuable advantage into the return fixture in Algeria this weekend.

Iloenyosi, chairman of the Anambra State Football Association, said the result reflected the determination and character of the Coal City Flying Antelopes. The former U-23 Olympic Eagles defender commended both the players and the technical crew for maintaining their discipline and courage during a difficult contest.

He also highlighted the fact that Rangers played with 10 men for a significant part of the match. Late goals from Kenneth Igboke and James Emo eventually rewarded the Nigerian side's persistence and commitment.

Iloenyosi said the performance showed that Nigerian clubs could compete with strong opponents on the continental stage. "This is a commendable victory for Rangers and Nigerian football.

To beat a strong team like MC Alger 2-0 in such difficult circumstances shows great character and determination," Iloenyosi said. "I congratulate the players, coaches, management and fans.

They have made Enugu and Nigeria proud." The nine-time Nigerian champions now face the task of protecting their lead in the decisive second leg. Iloenyosi, popularly known as 'De General', warned the team not to allow the first-leg victory to reduce their focus.

"The team must remain humble and determined. With the same spirit and togetherness, they can finish the job and qualify for the group stage," he added.

Iloenyosi also expressed hope that Rangers' display would encourage other Nigerian clubs to approach continental competitions with greater ambition and confidence. The victory gives Rangers a two-goal cushion before their trip to Algeria for the second leg.
