Rob Edwards has opened up on the one big mistake he made during his time with Luton Town in the Premier League. The 43-year-old took charge of the Hatters in November 2022, replacing Nathan Jones after he jumped ship to Southampton.

And he led the team to promotion success that season, with the club beating Coventry City in the play-off final to earn a place in the Premier League for the first time. It was their first time competing in the top flight of English football since 1991/92, but they were unable to survive beyond one campaign.

Luton earned 26 points and were six adrift of 17th place Nottingham Forest at the end of the campaign. Edwards' time at Kenilworth Road ultimately came to an end in the following season, with the team struggling for form in the Championship, and they were eventually relegated for a second year in a row under Matt Bloomfield.

Rob Edwards opens up on key Luton mistake Action Images Edwards believes that he and his Luton side went into the Premier League with a bit too much respect for their opponents initially. He highlighted a number of games where their approach wasn't working, and that they had to make big tactical changes to try and turn around their form, with a loss to Brentford in December particularly standing out to him all these years later.

"We probably went in with a little bit too much respect at first," said Edwards, via The Managers podcast. "Because you might have had it a little bit as well with what you created at Stoke, and especially what you had going at home.

We had to try and use that at Luton as well. Full credit to every one of the big teams that came, they didn't want to be the ones that lost there, you know what I mean?

We lost the first four games, and it was a big learning curve straight away. We went to Brighton, which was under Roberto de Zerbi at the time, who were doing what they do, they were like a Rubik's cube to try and play against them, you try and solve that.

We were 2-1 going into the last 10 minutes we lost 4-1, we opened up and they went bang bang. Then we went away to Chelsea, lost 3-0 and we're like 'we need to just try to tighten up a little bit here and there'."
