Saudi, Bundesliga clubs chasing CF Montreal's Prince Owusu: report

A major shakeup is needed at CF Montreal, and their best player could be on the move this winter. Leading scorer Prince Owusu is wanted by Saudi club Al-Shabab SFC according to transfer insider Ekrem Konur.

There are also Bundesliga clubs interested in acquiring the German-born Ghana international. Former CF Montreal sporting director Olivier Renard is in the same role at Al-Shabab, a team that includes a handful of playing with waning stardom - including Yannick Carrasco, Daniel Podence and Thomas Partey.

Owusu has 18 goals in 32 games in all competitions this season, with 15 in 26 of those being in MLS play and the rest in the Canadian Championship. Montrealare already eliminated from playoff contention, so there are a maximum of three games left for him to add to his MLS totals.

Owusu first came to Major League Soccer with Montreal's 401 Derby rivals Toronto FC in 2023, also spending 2024 in Toronto with limited success. A 2025 move east to Montreal saw him find the best form of his career, scoring 35 goals and adding nine assists in 72 games over the past two seasons on a Montreal side that hasn't even come particularly close to making the MLS playoffs in either year.

With a scoring rate like that over the past couple of years, it wouldn't be a shock if other MLS teams were interested in his services either should he wish to stay in North America. Owusu, who turns 30 in January, came through the academy at VfB Stuttgart but never appeared for the first team.

After second team stints at that club and TSG Hoffenheim II, he signed for Arminia Bielefeld, going on two loans to 1860 Munich. Stops at SC Paderborn, Erzgebirge Aue and Jahn Regensburg followed before ending up in Toronto.

By far the most success he has had in his career has been in Montreal from an individual standpoint. This 2026 campaign is going to end on a sour note as Owusu missed two penalties in CF Montreal's embarrassing loss to Forge FC in the Canadian Championship final last week after he boldly predicted weeks ago that they would be the team celebrating with the Voyageurs Cup.

He has also missed games on either side of the final due to injury. In December Owusu signed a contract extension through the 2027-2028 MLS season with options through 2029-2030.

As other players, including major summer recruit Alexis Sanchez, weigh up their future in Montreal, Owusu could be heading out the door in search of greener pastures. Replacing his goals and leadership would be a tough task for a Montreal side that still needs a permanent manager as well, but with a complete roster overhaul expected, maybe now is the time to cash in on, and move on from, Owusu.
