'Tottenham would have won the Premier League if not for Wembley' - Dele Alli claims

Dele Alli believes Tottenham Hotspur would have been crowned Premier League champions under Mauricio Pochettino if not for one decision from the club's hierarchy. While the conventional wisdom seems to be that the 2015-16 season, when Leicester City were crowned Champions, was Tottenham's best chance of winning the title, the Lilywhites were at their zenith under Mauricio Pochettino during 2016-17.

In what was their final season at White Hart Lane, Spurs were unbeaten at home, winning 17 of their 19 matches at N17, eventually finishing with a club-record 86 points. However, Antonio Conte's Chelsea pipped them to the title, finishing with 93 points, although the London rivals were neck-and-neck until the final few games of the campaign.

Dele, who was one of the best players in the Premier League at the time, believes that Pochettino's Spurs would have had a league title if they delayed their stadium move by one more season. The MK Dons academy graduate then went on to admit that there was an extra bit of pain among the players leaving the Lane in 2016-17, given that they had not won the title yet.

Obviously, I'm not in the recruitment team. I just felt that at that time, we had so much momentum at White Hart Lane, the step to Wembley kind of took that away.

Obviously, we were so close and there was even that extra bit of pain because we hadn't won it yet. For me, personally, one more year and we would have done it [won the Premier League].

Speaking to the club's official website, Victor Wanyama admitted that scoring in the final game at the Lane was special, as was going unbeaten in the final season at the historic venue.

Wanyama said: We had a great group, and we always wanted to improve each game. Every weekend when we went out, we wanted to prove to ourselves that we could stay at the top.

That's how it should be, competing every weekend. Once you play here, the way you are treated, the reaction from the fans, it's amazing."
