Trent Alexander-Arnold handed unthinkable Premier League escape route after Jose Mourinho Real Madrid snub

Ever since his controversial departure from Liverpool to join European giants Real Madrid in the summer of 2025, things haven't exactly gone to plan for Alexander-Arnold. After a disappointing debut season led to him missing out on England's World Cup squad, the defender now finds himself out of favour with Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho, reportedly piquing the interest of Arsenal who are considering a shock move.

Advert This situation has led to the 27-year-old being linked with an exit from Real Madrid just over one year after joining the Spanish side. According to Fussball News, Arsenal are among the clubs monitoring Alexander-Arnold's current situation, with the Premier League champions reportedly eager to bring him back to his best following his impressive spells in England with Liverpool.

After graduating from the club's academy, Alexander-Arnold played nine seasons for Liverpool's first team, from 2016/17 to 2024/25, making 354 appearances in all competitions with 23 goals and 86 assists. The report claims that Arsenal view Alexander-Arnold as an exciting option that could add further talent to the right-back position, offering something different to both Jurrien Timber and Ben White.

Of course, if Arsenal do hope to make a move for the former Liverpool star, they will have to wait until the winter transfer window, which opens on January 1, 2027 and runs for one month, to do so. But, as it stands, Real Madrid are believed to have no plans to let Alexander-Arnold leave as they continue to consider the right-back an important part of the squad.

The report adds that no concrete negotiations between Arsenal, Real Madrid, or the players' representatives have taken place so far, but initial exploratory talks could take place soon, once Alexander-Arnold's role within Real Madrid's squad become clear. And, should Real Madrid consider letting him go, the report claims that Arsenal would be asked to pay a transfer fee in the range of €70 to €80million (€70 to €80million).

Alexander-Arnold's situation at Real Madrid has also led to some claims that he could make a stunning return to Anfield in the near future, particularly with his former club struggling for options at right-back since his departure. But, in a recent Q&A for the Liverpool Echo, journalist Ian Doyle played down the chances of the defender returning, explaining why he thinks it's unlikely.

He wrote: "It would represent quite a climbdown for Trent Alexander-Arnold to return to Liverpool any time soon, and the fact is the Reds have, similar to any club in their situation, moved on. "There's no doubt Trent is better than any of Liverpool's current right-back options and, for me, is the best to play for the club in that position during my 43-and-a-half years of watching the Reds.

"While the likes of Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler have proven it is possible to make a successful return, the manner in which Trent left for Real Madrid suggests the hassle might not be worth it. He deserved better, but that's all in the past now.
