WATCH: Ex-Canada star Lucas Cavallini scores 1st Canadian Premier League goal for Forge FC

Lucas Cavallini has scored in Liga MX, MLS, for Canada and in the Uruguayan top flight throughout his career. Now he can add Canadian Premier League goalscorer to his resume.
Just as the Canadian men's national team was seeing out a 2-0 win over Peru in Montreal on Saturday afternoon, Cavallini opened the scoring for Forge FC against the Halifax Wanderers, just four minutes in. Cavallini had 19 goals in 40 appearances for Canada between 2012 and 2023, good for a tie for fourth all-time in CanMNT history, and now has one in the CPL in just his third appearanceafter a summer transfer- and first at home.
Cavallini was in the right place at the right time when Antoine Batisse expertly backheeled the ball into his path at the back post on a corner kick into the box. Cavallini reacted quickly to redirect it into the gaping net, and Wanderers goalkeeper Marco Carducci could only watch as it hit the back of the net past his outstretched arm.
That goal looked like it might be the winner for Forge, especially when Dan Nimick doubled the Hammers' advantage in the 78th minute, but the game was far from over. Nelson Pierre pulled one back in the 81st to give the Wanderers some hope, but Ismael Oketokoun seemed to put the game out of reach when he made it 3-1 in the 90th minute.
The key word there is "seemed," because eight minutes of stoppage time were on the fourth official's board and the visitors took full advantage. Liam Mackenzie, on loan in Halifax from the Vancouver Whitecaps, rolled a low shot past Dino Bontis in the 94th minute to cut the deficit back down to one, before Tavio Ciccarelli poked the ball into the back of the net on the last kick of the game in the 13th minute of stoppage time for a shock 3-3 draw.
The point could be crucial for Halifax, who climbed back over Inter Toronto into fifth place after ITO beat league leaders Cavalry 3-1 at York Lions Stadium. They're now six points back of Vancouver with three games left in the regular season to make up ground.
Cavalry losing gave Forge a chance to move within three points of the top of the table with a game in hand, but they couldn't take advantage with just four matches left on the schedule. They probably wish they had Kyle Bekker's leadership on the pitch, but their longtime captain retired on Thursday after suffering an ACL injury in what was likely his final season anyway.
Dropped points have been a trend lately. Forge have drawn four of their past five matches, including one against Cavalry.
They could still win three trophies this season with the CPL Shield, North Star Cup and Canadian Championship, but this draw was a blow for their Shield hopes. "I think today's is a big wake up call," said Nimick after the game.
