Why is Bruno Fernandes benched for Manchester United vs Bournemouth in Premier League 2026-27?

The midfielder has been benched after his recent interview. Bruno Fernandes has been dropped from Manchester United's starting line-up against Bournemouth by Michael Carrick.

United's captain has been named on the bench by head coach Carrick as he attempts to turn his team's fortunes around at a critical time. What could be the major reason to bench Bruno?

The UEFA Champions League match loss marked United's ninth game without a win and led to Carrick apologising to fans. Following his criticism of Carrick's poor style and the midfielder's sluggish performance against Como, the coach has now decided to start captain Fernandes on the bench.

The former United midfielder (now coach) was asked on Friday whether he would strip the Portugal international of the leadership. "I'll always do what's best for the football club," he said.

"If I've spoken to (Fernandes) or haven't spoken to him, I don't think this is the time to go into too much detail." Bruno Fernandes has started all 10 of United's games in the Premier League and Champions League thus far this season. He was a sub in the Carabao Cup defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.

He has missed just a few games since joining from Sporting CP in January 2020, mostly through injury or sickness. The player has played in 186 of United's 197 Premier League games since the beginning of the 2020-21 campaign.

This is the first time this season that Bruno Fernandes has been on the bench for the start of a Premier League match. His last start off the bench was on May 4, 2025, in a 4-3 defeat at Brentford.

Bruno Fernandes post-match interview after Como game Asked about his capacity to address problems, Fernandes told UK channel TNT Sports on Wednesday: "It was a staff decision not to press man-to-man."

"I think sometimes we have to be more brave under pressure, take a risk of getting that press very high and making them uncomfortable, as they did to us," he added.

"The centre-back was coming to mark me all the way into my own half."
