Why is Liverpool vs Arsenal the only Premier League game on Sunday?

Sunday's Premier League action is limited to just Liverpool vs Arsenal at Anfield. Most weekends bring at least one more Sunday fixture, but this week's other late game, Newcastle vs Everton, will be played on Monday night at St James' Park.

This is due to Aston Villa's upcoming trip to Barcelona in the Champions League. When the Premier League confirmed the fixtures for this gameweek, Aston Villa vs Fulham was scheduled for Sunday.

UEFA did not release the Champions League league-phase schedule until 29 August and hence, Sunday looked fine for Villa. However, Unai Emery's team will travel to the Camp Nou to face Barcelona on Tuesday, 3 November, and the Premier League works to a guideline that clubs should not play twice inside 60 hours.

A Sunday afternoon game at Villa Park before a Tuesday night clash in Catalonia left too little room. That is why Aston Villa vs Fulham was shifted to Saturday, 31 October.

Since both Villa and Fulham played Carabao Cup fourth-round ties in midweek, the game could not be held on Friday either. Premier League results on Saturday: City beaten, Chelsea and Spurs win Brighton's 1-0 win at the Etihad, with Ayari scoring in the 11th minute, was Saturday's headline result.

Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0, thanks to goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer, who converted a penalty after Lisandro Martinez's red card. Tottenham beat 10-man Crystal Palace 2-0, with Archie Gray and Jean Paul van Hecke scoring after Jean-Philippe Mateta got sent off in the 13th minute.

Spurs have now made it three league wins in a row. Nicolas Jackson scored before a Zion Suzuki own goal ensured the visitors got a point.

Coventry beat Sunderland 3-1, Bournemouth and Brentford won 2-0 against Leeds and Nottingham Forest, respectively, and Hull City vs Ipswich Town ended 2-2. Arsenal stay second on 21 points from eight games, level with City, who have played an extra game.

The Gunners can reclaim their place at the top of the Premier League table if they don't lose to Liverpool. Notably, Arsenal have not won at Anfield since 2012.
