Why were there green & yellow balloons during Manchester United vs Aston Villa Premier League 2026-27 clash?

Two unfamiliar colours took over the Red Devils' home tonight. During Manchester United's Premier League 2026-27 clash against Aston Villa on Sunday, November 8, one peculiar sight was seen at Old Trafford.

Instead of the iconic red colour of United, the home supporters displayed green and yellow balloons, with those two colours washing over the entire stadium. The green and yellow colours were a nod to United's original club colours during their founding in 1878.

The reason why the supporters sported green and yellow during tonight's match was to protest against United's current ownership and management. Supporters used Manchester United 's origins as Newton Heath to express their opposition to the Glazer family and minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, as well as other key figures in the club's hierarchy.

This included director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada. The balloons, which were prominently displayed at the Stretford End, were released when the United players emerged from the tunnel ahead of kick-off.

United fans protest Glazers & Ratcliffe The balloon protest is part of a long-running campaign against the club's higher-ups, with several fan clubs - including the supporter group The 1958 - instructing fans to carry gold and yellow "balloons, scarves and shirts" to Old Trafford for tonight's match. Alongside anti-Glazer chants, the United supporters also unveiled several banners opposing the club's proposed plans to build a new home stadium.

"We don't want a new stadium, we want new owners," one banner read, while another read, "We don't want a new stadium, we want a new board." Supporters objected to the proposed spending on a new stadium instead of investing in the squad, resulting in United's worst-ever start in the Premier League under head coach Michael Carrick. The home side's thrilling draw with Aston Villa tonight kept them in 18th place in the Premier League and in danger of relegation.

Tonight marked the second fixture in which United fans displayed green and gold balloons in protest against the club's hierarchy. The same happened during the UEFA Champions League match against AS Roma earlier in the week, when fans also briefly halted play by throwing tennis balls onto the pitch.
