Zamalek backed for Champions League glory after Mamelodi Sundowns exit

Moroccan coach Abd el-Rahim Taleb believes Zamalek can go deep in this season's CAF Champions League after securing their place in the group stage at the expense of APR FC. Zamalek completed a 2-0 aggregate victory over the Rwandan club on Saturday, winning both legs 1-0.

The result takes them into the group stage for the first time in three seasons. Taleb, APR's head coach, said his side failed to perform at the required level during the first half of the second leg but improved significantly after the interval.

"We did not deliver the level expected in the first half, but our performance was better after the break," Taleb told ON Sport after the match. "We controlled the game and created opportunities, but we could not turn them into goals.

The coach said the second leg followed a similar pattern to the first meeting in Kigali. He added that the tactical changes made at half-time helped APR reach the Zamalek penalty area more frequently, although a lack of composure in front of goal prevented them from changing the result.

Taleb nevertheless said APR had gained valuable experience from their African campaign, despite the difficulty of facing Zamalek. He credited the Egyptian side's experience and the influence of their large home support, while acknowledging that APR's attacking approach was not enough to overcome their opponents.

Reaching the goal through the wide areas was not sufficient because our players lacked accuracy when finishing their attacks," he said. Taleb also praised Zamalek's history and winning mentality.

He said the club had a strong tradition of collecting trophies, a talented squad and substitutes, as well as a high-quality coach. "I congratulate Zamalek and I hope they win the title," he said.

The Moroccan believes Zamalek's prospects have been strengthened by the early departure of defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, while Al Ahly and Wydad are also absent from this season's competition. Those developments, he said, give Zamalek a genuine opportunity to reach the latter stages and challenge for the trophy.

"I hope Zamalek can make the most of these circumstances and go on to win the title," Taleb added.
